Wanaka, a resort town on New Zealand's South Island, is set on the southern end of its namesake lake with views of snowcapped mountains. It's the gateway to the Southern Alps' Mount Aspiring National Park, a wilderness of glaciers, beech forests and alpine lakes. Treble Cone and Cardrona ski resorts are near the park. Just outside the town is the outdoor maze and sculpture gallery of Puzzling World.
The town is compact and located on the lakeshore. It is an easy walk to shops and restaurants. A number of operators offer car or mountain bike hire. Also if you're interested in getting around the area, perhaps visit Lake Hawea, there is a new local carpool system that works on a gold coin donation for a ride.
Rippon Winery is a maker of biodynamic wines, this long-running, family-owned lakeside vineyard offers a tasting room on a small hill to look out Lake Wanaka.
Rent a bike and cycle near lake Wanaka. You can ride to Albertown, or alternatively do some downhill cycling from the mountains near Wanaka.
Mount Aspiring National Park is described as a dramatic alpine landscape with glaciers, snowfields, snow-capped mountains, grasslands, river valleys, lakes, waterfalls, and beech forests. The Bonar, Therma, and Volta are the largest glaciers in the park. The Drake River flows entirely within the Mount Aspiring National Park joining the Waiatoto River which crosses the park from the Aspiring mount lake towards the Tasman Sea in another direction.
